Israel Surprises
Recently my husband and I were blessed with the opportunity to visit Israel. “Israel”… even the name is magical. We found the land to be surprising. In the space of a few hours we traveled from the beautiful, lust valleys of the north and Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) to the starkness of the Judean Wilderness and the Negev Desert. Although Israel is a small country there is so much to see, places I’ve read about, dreamed about seeing with my own eyes. History is around every corner, in every small village, on every majestic mountain. My favorite place was Caesarea, on the Mediterranean coast. The people of Israel are also surprising. We saw every kind of face as we traveled through the country. It is truly a multi-national, multi-cultural country. And the only word you need to know is “Shalom,” which means hello, goodbye, and peace.
And now, after mentioning the land and the people, I must comment on the beautiful Israeli jewelry. In so many little shops I saw jewelry like I have never seen anywhere else. The jewelry makers in Israel seem to prefer making their products by hand, each item is unusual and unique. The Israeli jewelry designers use crystals, beads and precious metals in ways that excite the imagination. Each piece is lovelier than the last. I purchased a ring with a piece of Roman Glass in it. Can you imagine….I wear on my finger a piece of history! My taste runs more toward an old-fashioned look with romantic, flowery designs, and there is plenty of this in Israeli jewelry. However, I also saw stunning necklaces and earrings with modern, sleek designs. There really is something for every taste.
In all, I only have one complaint about our visit to Israel….our time was too short. We are already planning our next trip, and I’m starting a special “fund” for my next Israeli jewelry shopping trip!
